Man finds insect in chocolate cake at Ikea Hyderabad store

Ikea landed in controversy again after a customer who bought a chocolate cake from the store's food outlet complained of an insect in it.

Swedish multinational group Ikea's date with insects refuses to end. Weeks after a customer complained about finding a caterpillar in his biryani, ordered at Ikea's store in Hyderabad, another customer has said that he found a insect in a chocolate cake that he ordered at the Ikea store.

After noticing the insect in his cake, the customer recorded a video and posted it on Twitter. In the video, an insect can be seen crawling over the chocolate cake.

The customer said he visited the store and ordered a cake for his daughter. "I found an insect inside the chocolate cake which came out while my daughter was eating the cake at Ikea store today in Hyderabad," he said in his tweet.

Meanwhile, the municipal authorities have slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 on Ikea and have collected food samples for test.

However, Ikea has denied reports that it has been fined by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation. It though has expressed "regret" over the incident.

Speaking to India Today TV, Ikea's spokesperson said, "In the Ikea Hyderabad restaurant, when a customer was eating a chocolate cake which he bought, a fly was seen on the cake which eventually flew away."

"We regret this and apologise to our customer for the unfortunate experience. We are taking steps to avoid such occurrences. However, no samples were collected or inspection carried out by GHMC on the said incident. Further, Ikea has not been issued any notice or fined by the corporation."

Earlier this month, when another customer had complained of an insect in his food, the civic body had slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 on Ikea. The store had then promised that they will take utmost care to ensure that such incidents aren't repeated.

"At Ikea, we have the strictest guidelines when it comes to food safety and quality as customers' health and safety are something we care about deeply," Ikea had said in statement.
