Food writer Julie Powell, author of ‘Julie and Julia,’ dead at 49

Julie Powell, the food writer behind the blog which was turned into the memoir “Julie and Julia,” has died at 49.

The cause of death was cardiac arrest, her husband Eric Powell reportedly said. She died at her home in in Olivebridge, New York on Oct. 26, 2022

“Julie & Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen” — in which Powell prepared all the recipes from Julia Child’s “Mastering the Art of French Cooking” — became a best-seller after its 2005 release. It was later adapted into a film starring Amy Adams as Powell and Meryl Streep as Julia Child and directed by Nora Ephron.

Powell went on to write for several food publications, appear on cooking-centric TV shows and twice wining a James Beard Award.

“‘Julie & Julia’ became an instant classic and it is with gratitude for her unique voice that we will now remember Julie’s dazzling brilliance and originality,” Judy Clain, the editor-in-chief of Little, Brown and Co., said in a statement to NBC News.

“We mourn her loss with her husband Eric and her family. We are sending our deepest condolences to all who knew and loved Julie, whether personally or through the deep connections she forged with readers of her memoirs. She was a brilliant writer and a daring, original person and she will not be forgotten.”
