Unawatuna Beach

The South coast of Sri Lanka has some of the most beautiful beaches in the country. Unawatuna, just a few kilometres away from Galle, itself about 2 hours from Colombo and accessible by car, train or bus, is renowned as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

If there was only one beach you had time to visit on your trip to Sri Lanka, Unawatuna beach should definitely be considered. It is easy to access, and the town is well connected with the beach, offering access to shops, great restaurants and plenty of places to stay.

The main beach is great for swimming and sunbathing and is popular with both tourists and locals. You can rent sunbeds here and relax as you get a nice golden tan to show off on the gram. At the West corner of the beach, watch out for the little path that leads you up to the pagoda which overlooks the bay.

Wijeya beach is a small, secluded beach you can go to which is located close by. The rope swing there is likely one of the most instagrammed spots in Sri Lanka, search on Google maps for Dream Cabana, Unawatuna and you will find it.

Jungle Beach is another great little beach which, as its name would indicate, is a secluded slice of paradise away from the bustle of the more popular beaches. You can get there via a short drive or tuk tuk ride. Another option to get around is to rent a motorbike.

Another popular activity to partake in unawatuna is diving. It is a famous spot to learn diving from and has experienced diving schools which will guide you through the process. Diving is a rewarding experience here as you can explore an underwater world rich with corals and sea life. Perhaps you will even encounter a friendly turtle or two, make sure you have your GoPro handy for a quick selfie!

The Unawatuna Bay has some trendy restaurants and places to hang-out and chill. Some of our favorites include Skinny Tom’s Deli for a the best breakfasts and Lemongrass Cafe. Aside from the backpacker circuit, Unawatuna has some fantastic resorts and spas which have operated there for years, perfecting a service offering which will guarantee a memorable holiday in Sri Lanka.
